Kathmandu to Lukla (30 mintues by flight), Trek from Lukla to Phakding – 3hrs

Due to regulatory changes and upgrades at Kathmandu Domestic Airport, Luklas is likely to fly from Manthal Airport in Ramechhap district. This means a four-hour overnight drive from Kathmandu. The flight from Manthali leaves early in the morning and takes 20-30 minutes. When you arrive in Lukla, our experienced local porters will be waiting for you. Going along the road to Phakding, we already see Tibetan prayer flags flying and meet local people walking around chanting Tibetan mantras.

Today, the road takes us through forests, traditional farming villages and yak pastures. When we reach the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park, we see Thamserku towering above us. After lunch we continue to Namche Bazaar. It is the largest Sherpa village in the Khumbu region and is the starting point for expeditions and hiking groups.

There aren’t many steep ups and downs today, so there’s plenty of time to focus on photography! Stupas (Buddhist shrines), prayer flags, hand walls (walls carved with Buddhist prayers) and mountains such as Ama Dablam and Tengboche Monastery are all worth photographing. The road to Tengboche is a dusty return trip, but the panoramic views from the monastery make it all worth it. The course is of course very scenic, but also quite difficult these days. We follow Imja Khola before climbing windy (mainly potato fields) to Dingboche.
